The New Trend: "Teenage Skin Care"
As the age of social media use has decreased, so has the age at which skincare trends are applied. Along with this, we encountered a new concept: "tween skincare routine." We see many posts and recommendations under this concept, which covers the skincare of children aged 12-18.
As a dermatologist, I believe that the skincare routine applied in this age group should be as simple as possible. Unless there is a special condition recommended by your doctor, a suitable routine would simply involve cleansing, moisturizing, and protection.
CLEANSING; Generally, during this period when sebum secretion increases and skin imperfections become more prominent, we can say that this is the most important stage of the care routine. Contrary to popular belief, instead of cleansers with harsh, drying ingredients, gentle cleansing products with ingredients that do not disturb the moisture balance should be preferred. Cleansers containing too many foaming surfactants are not suitable for this process.
MOISTURIZING; Unfortunately, this is a very important stage that oily, combination, and acne-prone skin types generally neglect. Skin that loses moisture tries to compensate for this loss by secreting more sebum, leading to an increase in unwanted blemishes, shine, and clogged pores.
SUNSCREEN; Protecting the skin from the sun's harmful rays is one of the best investments for the future. Adolescent skin is more sensitive to UV rays, and if not properly protected from sunlight, it can lead to serious health problems in later years. As with adults, sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours and thoroughly removed from the skin before going to bed at night.
Just as every skin type has different needs, so does every age. Taking this into account, product ingredients should be examined carefully, and it should not be forgotten that your dermatologist can be consulted for the most appropriate routine.
