Ciltteki Sinsi Düşmanlar: Demodeksler

Insidious Skin Enemies: Demodex Mites

Demodex mites are microscopic organisms naturally found deep in the skin, especially in hair follicles and sebaceous glands, and in most individuals, they complete their life cycles without causing any symptoms or problems. However, when the skin barrier is disrupted, oil production increases, or irritation begins, they cease to be "silent guests" and transform into a "hidden enemy," says Specialist Doctor Işıl Kamberoğlu Turan. She emphasizes that from now on, we must consider them a cunning neighbor and determine our strategy accordingly.

In most people, they complete their life cycles without causing any symptoms or problems. However, when the skin barrier is disrupted, oil production increases, or skin irritation begins, these "silent guests" suddenly transform into a "hidden enemy." Specialist Doctor Işıl Kamberoğlu Turan emphasizes that at this point, we should view them as a "cunning neighbor" and determine our strategy accordingly.

With the proliferation of these cunning enemies, rosacea (acne rosacea) or acne lesions can be triggered. Redness, irritation, dryness, and an increase in inflamed pimples are observed on the skin. The main goal of treatment is to reduce mite density.

Now, Dermatology Specialist Dr. Işıl Kamberoğlu Turan shares her step-by-step skincare routine…

Dermatology Specialist Dr. Işıl Kamberoğlu Turan explains her step-by-step skincare routine as follows:

Step 1 – Cleansing: In the morning and evening, cleansers with a slightly acidic pH (5.5) in gel or foam form should be preferred. She underlines the need to avoid double-cleansing or intensive oil-based cleansers. The reason for this is that demodex mites love oil.

Step 2 – Active Ingredient Selection: Azelaic acid stands out as one of the most valuable active ingredients. Dr. Turan emphasizes that azelaic acid is both an effective and reliable ingredient for sensitive skin prone to rosacea, irritated skin, and acne-prone skin. She also states that it can be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

So, what does azelaic acid do?

Azelaic acid exhibits an antimicrobial effect by limiting the proliferation of bacteria and harmful microorganisms carried by demodex mites. Thanks to its keratin-regulating property, it prevents clogging and irritation in follicles, thereby reducing acne lesions. With its spot-reducing effect, it lightens the appearance of red-brown spots that occur after acne, and by limiting melanin production, it reduces color inequalities.

The most effective ingredient: Tea Tree Oil
Plays a critical role in reducing the number of Demodex mites. It directly kills the mite by paralyzing its nervous system or makes its habitat unsustainable by disrupting the cell oil barrier.

Another ingredient with a strong acid load that we utilize in masks is: SULPHUR

Since high concentrations can increase irritation, it is suitable for limited use 1-2 times a week. With its sebum-reducing effect, it absorbs excess oil and reduces oil-keratin plugs. It narrows the environment for bacteria to multiply. With its keratolytic effect, it provides gentle exfoliation, opening pores and preventing comedone formation. It provides an antimicrobial effect by leading to the death of some bacteria and fungi. When all these mechanisms are actively engaged, a powerful "fire extinguishing" system is created in the skin. Doctor Işıl completes her skincare routine by stating that moisturizers with low oil content, water-based, non-comedogenic, containing ceramide or hyaluronic acid, which will increase barrier and moisture support, are indispensable.
